As the largest Mexican heritage celebration in the Midwest, the 25th annual Festival de La Villita rings in Mexican Independence Day weekend. Games, carnival rides, and food and merchandise vendors crowd around the intersection of 26th and Kostner. Today’s musical acts include Los Temibles, Banda Artillero, and Alfredo Fernandez.
The Hyde Park Art Center celebrates its 75th anniversary with food trucks, a petting zoo, a bouncy castle, and all-day beer. The BBQ Block Party coincides with the openings of two Art Center exhibitions and features a pig roast at 6 PM.
There’s no need to journey to a galaxy far, far away. Skokie will do. The Skokie Public Library hosts a Star Wars Extravaganza at 2:30 PM today, featuring special guest Jeffrey Brown, a graphic novelist and author of the new children’s book Jedi Academy. Brown doesn’t just write for young Padawans; his adult works include Vader’s Little Princess and Darth Vader and Son.
