Local salons hit the runway and go head-to-head and hair-to-hair for this year’s Hair Wars, hosted by the Mid. Models sport outrageous, towering hairdos adorned with everything from feathers to jewels to small bicycles. The top three salons win a place in the Hair Wars world finals, the largest follicle spectacle of the year.
A collaboration between First Floor Theater and the Chicago Park District, Tollbooth: A Clown Show is more than a typical variety act or theater performance. At 2 PM on Sundays, performers teach kids the ways of clowning and puppet art, then treat them to a free staging of the show at 3 PM at Humboldt Park Field House. Perhaps it’s all a recruiting tactic to ensure we avoid that Great Clown Drought predicted earlier this year.
Holly Golightly & the Brokeoffs play at Wire tonight with Some Velvet Evening and Butterfields. But, as he explains in Soundboard, “the record set me straight instantly when I put it on—the only real change to the duo’s scrappy postpunk take on American roots music is the addition of honky-tonk piano to several tunes.”
