Looking for something to do today? Agenda’s got you covered:
The Chicago Golden Gloves boxing tournament has a long, storied history and an equally impressive list of former champs: Joe Louis, Sonny Liston, Cassius Clay, Michael “Lord of the Dance” Flatley. Who knew? The championships begin tonight at Cicero Stadium as a new generation of pugilists blackens eyes and fattens lips for the title.
The Messing in Messing With a Friend is comedian Susan Messing. The “friend” is a different partner every week, recruited to join in Messing’s special brand of improvisational mayhem at the Annoyance Theater. Former Reader contributor Ryan Hubbard called it “one of the funniest entertainments in town.” This week’s guest is Mark “Howard” Sutton, aka Bassprov’s Donny Weaver.
For the latest edition of Cinema Slapdown, Columbia College professor Ron Falzone hosts a debate on the Robert Zemeckis film Flight, featuring “Chicago Tribune film critic Michael (‘This one gets me high!’) Phillips versus United Airlines First Officer Dan (‘I’ll give you some unexpected turbulence!’) Swanson.” It takes place at Columbia College’s Film Row Cinema.
