Working on your photography skills? Filter Photo Festival is a great place to do that. The event—which runs through the weekend—will have tidbits on how to take and sell photos, with the final two days allocated to 20-minute portfolio reviews for blossoming photographers.

A stage adaptation of Marguerite Duras’s autobiographical novel The Lover, The North China Lover explores a 14-year-old’s relationship with a wealthy (and engaged) Chinese man in his 20s. Performances are at the Lookingglass Theatre.

British indie-pop band the XX perform at Aragon Ballroom tonight. LA-based singer-songwriter Nite Jewel opens.
