Frederick Wiseman’s four-hour documentary At Berkeley, which explores the nature and future of the large public research university, was Reader critic Ben Sachs’s number-one film of 2013. The doc is a challenge both for its length and the questions it raises, Sachs writes, but it’s well worth your time. It screens at the Gene Siskel Film Center through 2/5.

Chicago jazz staple Michael Zerang performs tonight at Bar DeVille with his new band the Blue Lights. “I can only imagine how hot the Blue Lights will be by the time they wrap up this weekly Tuesday residency at the end of the month, but they’re already on fire,” writes Peter Margasak in Soundboard.

Hopleaf hosts Tuesday Funk, “where good writing and good beer mix.” The featured readers for this edition are Ryan Bartelmay, Kelly Swails, Christa Desir, Jasmine Davila, and Christopher Sweet.
