David Bowie mania has officially hit Chicago, so much so that Mayor Rahm Emanual named today David Bowie Day in the city. It’s day one of the highly anticipated “David Bowie Is” exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art (220 E. Chicago), a collection of Bowie stage costumes, never-before-seen photos, handwritten lyric sheets, and other rare items. And then, of course, there’s the music: the Daley Plaza hosts the David Bowie Tribute Concert (noon at 50 W. Washington), featuring a performance by Sons of the Silent Age.
Joe Swanberg certainly kept busy in 2013; the local-turned-national filmmaker directed three feature films that were released this year and last, including the locally filmed ode to Revolution Brewery, Drinking Buddies. Tonight he discusses his work and career with Tribune arts writer Nina Metz at the Chicago Cultural Center.
San Francisco shoegaze rockers Whirr stop by the Beat Kitchen tonight. In Soundboard Luca Cimarusti writes, “On the brand-new Sway (Graveface), Whirr has tightened up a little bit, kicking up the tempos and focusing its energy into a concentrated beam of warm ‘n’ fuzzy indie rock. But the band is by no means going punk: the songs are still pretty and sad, just a little less spacey.”
