Looking for something to do today? Agenda‘s got you covered.
At Daley Plaza’s Eternal Flame this evening, a group of bikers will gather for a slow ride down a ten mile trail to memorialize the deaths of bikers injured or killed in accidents. The event, organized by the group Ride of Silence, coincides with other commemorative rides in cities around the world today and will be followed by a post-ride gathering at Yojimbo’s Garage.
Three performance companies—Blair Thomas & Company, Eighth Blackbird, and Lucky Plush Productions—come together today for the Unexpected, “an interwoven evening of music, dance and puppetry” at Columbia College Chicago’s Dance Center. The performance includes Blair Thomas & Company playing pieces composed by Stephen Montague and Chopin, Lucky Plush staging their surreal airport-based comedy, The Queue, and Eighth Blackbird performing György Ligeti’s Études and a rendition of Tom Johnson’s “Counting Duets” that organizers describe as “Sesame Street on acid.”
Fred Lonberg-Holm’s Lightbox Orchestra fuses colored lights and free-improvised sound for one-of-a-kind and increasingly rare performances. Today’s incarnation of the Orchestra will be comprised entirely of drummers—eight from Chicago and one, oddly, from Norway. It’s an “outrageous proposition” even by Lonberg-Holm’s standards, writes Peter Margasak, and an event not to be missed for improvised music fans.
