Even if you never get the chance to visit the musical mecca that is New Orleans, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band brings the city’s spirit to you. Since 1963, the group has brought NOLA’s vibe and sounds to venues across the country. They play two sets today at City Winery.

The Windy City Gay Idol finals are tonight at Mayne Stage. The winner of the citywide amateur singing competition receives a $1,000 prize, Smirnoff merchandise, a trip for two to Curacao, and lifelong bragging rights.

At Northwestern University’s Annie May Swift Hall, the Northwest Chicago Film Society hosts a free screening of 28mm films, a rare opportunity for movie buffs to enjoy the classic format. The stock was used as an alternative to 35mm nitrate-based film during the early days of cinema. Dino Everett from the Hugh M. Hefner Moving Image Archive discusses the format’s history.
