• Barbara Robertson as Rosita

Eurotrash at the opera? Irresistible. Take a big, joyous slug of Mozart’s divine music, season it with some sassy, outrageous sex and satire, and you’ve got something delicious. But director Calixto Bieito’s heavy-handed brand of Eurotrash shock theater wedded to Tennessee Williams at his most depressing is a different dish entirely, a whopper of a downer. It’s not surprising that the best moments of Goodman Theatre’s gorgeously acted, richly produced Camino Real are fabulous musical interludes by Jacqueline Williams and Andre De Shields: music speaks to what’s glorious about being human. The rest is unrelenting degradation. If you don’t want to stay home and flog yourself, you might want to catch these great performances.
