The news hasn’t exactly been spreading like wildfire, but David Havlicek, aka Dave Day, guitarist and banjo player for pioneering garage-punk weirdos the Monks, died January 10 at age 66 from an apparent heart attack. He was born and lived in the Seattle area, and the Stranger was on top of things with an excellent summary.

In recent years, the Monks have been the subject of a documentary film and played several reunion shows for their enduring and passionate audience. This picture was taken at Day’s last gig with the band, in Germany in October 2007. He looks happy. Tributes and condolences can be left at the band’s message board. As the rest of the Monks put it on their Web site: Play that banjo in heaven, Dave. Thanks to Bill Meyer for the nudge.
