When I profiled local rapper Rockie Fresh for the Reader just over a year ago, he was a rap-game rookie with an ambitious streak big enough to be noteworthy even within the subset of rappers who make their career ambitions the primary subject of their lyrics, and he had enough talent to back it up. On Monday he dropped his new Driving 88 mix tape, where he’s still playing the role of scrappy underdog on the come-up, but now his skills have been refined enough to let him swagger in a way he couldn’t before. The beats are slicker too—they aim for the kind of luxury-condo atmosphere Kanye and Drake are so good at generating, and hit the target almost every time. You can download it for free here.
