We’re kicking off Giving Tuesday early this year! Your donation today will be matched up to $10K, doubling your impact! If you donate $50 today, the Reader will receive $100.

The Reader is now a community-funded nonprofit newsroom. Can we count on your support to help keep us publishing?

Tuesday at 9 PM, the Hungry Brain at 2316 W. Belmont partners with the offbeat programming outfit Homeroom and the Japanese American Service Committee to present “Godzilla 101: Birth of an Atomic Monster.” Larry Mayo, professor of anthropology at DePaul University, discusses the cultural roots of the giant lizard, which became a metaphor for the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and a repository for Japan’s nuclear dread. Guests, a slide presentation, film clips, and live music complete the program.
