David Royko has just published a collection of his father’s writing that shows Mike Royko’s early promise. Royko in Love (University of Chicago Press) is, in fact, one long promise from Mike Royko to Carol Duckman that he will love her the rest of his life. Thumbing through the letters, I couldn’t get a line out of my head. It is the last line of A Moveable Feast, Hemingway’s memoir of his early 20s living in Paris with his first wife, Hadley. “Paris was always worth it, but this is how Paris was in the early days when we were very poor and very happy.”
