A musical tribute to Broadway songwriter Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin) will highlight this summer’s Johnny Mercer Songwriters Project at Northwestern University. Presented by the Johnny Mercer Foundation and NU’s American Music Theatre Project, A Celebration of Stephen Schwartz will honor Schwartz for his mentorship of young songwriters. Scheduled performers include singers Shoshana Bean and Lari White, composers Craig Carnelia and Andrew Lippa, and Schwartz himself. The same weekend also features a showcase of original music by the young composers and lyricists participating in this year’s Johnny Mercer Songwriters Project. Friday, August 6, 8 PM, Josephine Louis Theate, 20 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston, $10.

Schwartz’s other musical-theater credits include The Baker’s Wife, Children of Eden, and the lyrics for Leonard Bernstein’s Mass. Mercer, one of America’s greatest songwriters, wrote the lyrics and/or music for more than 1,500 standards, including such classics as “Come Rain or Come Shine,” “Blues in the Night,” “Laura,” “Days of Wine and Roses,” and “Moon River.”
