South Carolina lo-fi indie outfit Elvis Depressedly is one of a handful of acts who have helped Brooklyn label Orchid Tapes grow into a reliable source of outre bedroom pop. Last month Elvis Depressedly left Orchid Tapes for Run For Cover, the Boston label that’s been a boon to fourth-wave emo, and from the sound of the newish “No More Sad Songs (N.M.S.S.)” the band’s sound is evolving with grace. The humming distortion that courses through 2013’s Holo Pleasures is gone, and the songwriting has inched closer to straightforward pop bliss.
The song’s title is a reference to Elvis Depressedly’s reputation as a source for melancholic music—as front man Mat Cothran told Interview Magazine earlier this year, he never aimed to make depressing music, but this tune has a winsome weepiness that’s hard to resist. “No More Sad Songs” is today’s 12 O’Clock Track, and it’s also the first single from the band’s forthcoming album, New Alhambra. Elvis Depressedly headlines Beat Kitchen on Sunday; Advance Base is one of the opening acts, and front man Owen Ashworth tells me it’s the group’s annual Christmas performance.
