The Garfield Park Conservatory, the Reader‘s pick for Best respite from a Chicago winter, was badly damaged in the hailstorm of June 30. According to its website, approximately half of the glass panes in the roofs of the Fern Room, Show House, and nine propagation greenhouses were destroyed. Initially conditions were too dangerous for staff to enter, but as of Sunday select rooms had reopened to the public. The conservatory is soliciting donations here, but even better, there’s a special all-cold-soup fund-raiser edition of Soup and Bread at the Hideout tomorrow from 5:30 to 8 PM. Bartender, organizer, and Reader contributor Martha Bayne, who blogged about the catastrophe here, says that Swim Cafe, Inspiration Kitchens, Tre Kronor, Milk & Honey, Mana Food Bar, Big Star, Celestial Kitchens, and City Provisions are all on board so far, with bread being donated by La Farine. The Numero Group’s Michael Slaboch will DJ.
