This week, the Gene Siskel Film Center launches Castles in the Sky, a two-month retrospective of the animated films from Japan’s Studio Ghibli (Tal Rosenberg has a short review in the current issue of Only Yesterday, which plays in the series this week). The studio is renowned for its detailed, hand-drawn animation and for the masterful storytelling of its two main directors, Hayao Miayzaki and Isao Takahata; it’ll be a pleasure to see their films in a theater. This series doesn’t have anything to do with J.R. Jones’s insightful essay about the life and career of Jane Fonda that appears in this week’s issue, but I’d recommend spending time with both.
