I like the idea of websites that let people cull and post cool-looking things from around the web—like street fashion, it’s a glimpse inside the minds of others. Each person’s page is a little exquisitely curated lifestyle shop, thousands of personal Colettes. You don’t even need to think about buying—you can just admire. But is building a repository of proof of your good taste a meaningful experience? I often wonder how much energy is being expended on appearing cool rather than on personal passions that may not translate easily or be visible to the outside world (consider the work of Vivian Maier). In other words, to play on the old philosophical question, if a person creates something and no one sees it, does it matter? Or are we now only defined by how we appear to others?
