“Pathways to Unknown Worlds: Sun Ra, El Saturn & Chicago’s Afro-Futurist Underground 1954-1968,” the superb exhibition of Sun Ra paintings, drawings, album covers, manuscripts, and ephemera curated by John Corbett, Terri Kapsalis, and Anthony Elms, is hitting the road a couple years after its debut at the Hyde Park Art Center in 2006: the show opens tomorrow at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, the city where Sun Ra spent the last two and a half decades of his life, and runs through August 2.

Art critic Bert Stabler called the show his favorite local exhibition of 2006 in the Reader. A number of promising affiliated events are planned, including a performance by Arkestra under the direction of long-time reedist Marshall Allen, and a lecture by Sun Ra biographer John Szwed. Following the visit to Philly the show heads to the Durham Arts Guild in Durham, North Carolina.
