In June I wrote about Chicago production duo Supreme Cuts, who’ve got avant-garde sensibilities strapped to the kind of ambition they’d need to succeed on straight-up pop radio. It’s an interesting combination, to say the least, and the momentum they had built up when I profiled them has increased dramatically since the release of their debut LP, Whispers in the Dark, and a collaborative mixtape, Chrome Lips, with Brooklyn/Barbados rapper Haleek Maul (which Mishka has apparently removed from its Bandcamp page). And with God knows how many copies sold of the Target exclusive and iTunes UK deluxe versions of the new Maroon 5 record, which include a SupCuts remix of “Payphone,” the odds are that at least a few totally normal, middle-of-the-road listeners are down with them.
The group’s aggressive 2012 release schedule continues with Whispers in the Dark (ReAnimation), a six-track EP of Whispers remixes, most if not all by friends of the band. Chicago is well-represented by current and former residents: Sich Mang, Reader Fall Arts “One to Watch” The-Drum, and Brenmar. After one listen through, the standout for me is the remix of “Val Venus” by Brenmar, who’s been on a major roll recently in terms of creating totally insane club bangers. But I have a lot of walking around planned for the afternoon, and I’m putting ReAnimation on my iPhone right now—so that could easily change.
