The terrorist attacks of 9/11 were, in a sense, unthinkable: they happened just beyond the limits of most of our imaginations. Like the last chapter of a masterly horror novel, 9/11 was a ghastly plot turn we hadn’t seen coming but instantly apprehended when it came. The cunning author had had a perfect sense of our blind spot.
