I’m fascinated by engineers like Steve Albini (and his mentor, Iain Burgess), because the craft of the music engineer remains a beautiful mystery to me, as someone who loves music but only dimly understands the means of production. Which is why I’ve been geeking out this morning about an excerpt from Fool the World: The oral history of a band called Pixies, about the Surfer Rosa sessions (h/t mbimotmog). And which is why I’m going to try to finally get a copy of Greg Milner’s Perfecting Sound Forever today.
