…is the ballot. After the 2000 election disaster–it’s possible that George W. Bush was president for eight years because of bad graphics design–Marcia Lausen of UIC volunteered on behalf of the professional design organization AIGA to redesign Cook County’s ballots as part of AIGA’s Design for Democracy project.

The NYT has a great interactive graphic about AIGA’s work; earlier this year Chicago Magazine looked at the improvements for the Cook County ballot, and there’s some useful advice to be had. Business Week has a podcast with Lausen, and she’s also got a book.
