Time for a sad follow-up to this post: legendary singer-songwriter, storyteller, historian hobo, political activist, and radio personality Utah Phillips died peacefully in bed late Friday night of congestive heart failure at the age of 73. Radio station KVMR, in his hometown of Nevada City, California, posted a long and moving letter that Utah had written to his friends and fans on May 14, a typically vivid, poetic, and even funny account of his last days.

The family requests that any who wish to make donations in his memory give to Hospitality House, a shelter for the homeless that Phillips cofounded.
