In case you might otherwise forget, Joe Hocking and Mark Skwarek are out to make sure the BP logo forever means disaster. They’re designing an application that allows users to point their iPhone at any BP logo and see it gush with leaking crude.
“An important component of the project is that it uses BP’s corporate logo as a marker, to orient the computer-generated 3D graphics,” Hocking says, “basically turning their own logo against them. This repurposing of corporate icons will offer future artists and activists a powerful means of expression which will be easily accessible to the masses and at the same time will be safe and nondestructive.”
Hocking and Skwarek present their project, “The Leak In Your Hometown,” in the monthly Upgrade! Chicago new media series, Tuesday at 7 p.m. at The Nightingale, 1084 N. Milwaukee Ave. It’s free.
