Crain’s has a brutal piece about the new Tribune prototype:

“A version under consideration devotes the paper’s front section to consumer-oriented and entertainment features. Local, national, international and business news is consolidated in the second section.”

I doubt that Gerould Kern will be an especially well-regarded figure if the Trib ends up getting wrapped in RedEye (“consumer-oriented…” nooo…), but having been the chief production editor at a college newspaper that was closer to running out of money when I took over than the Trib is, I do feel for the man. Playing Grim Reaper for a company that’s at risk of defaulting on billions of dollars in debt is not something I wish on anyone.
