Time to plan the weekend. Here’s some of what we recommend:
Fri 4/22: Jessie and Jennifer Calvin, the LA-based sisters known as Bleached, play the Empty Bottle (1035 N. Western) tonight. In Soundboard Luca Cimarusti writes, “The Clavins take a turn into high-octane pop rock, cramming all ten tracks with shiny, high-gain guitar leads, massive pop hooks, and layered backup vocals.” 9 PM
4/22-5/27: Vienna Juvenile presents The Adventures of Reginald Sampson (and the Consequence of Bliss), a sketch comedy show about storytelling and its effect on reality. Check it out at iO Theater (1501 N. Kingsbury). Fri 10:30 PM
Through 5/5: Created by the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in 1967, the “Bologna Illustrations” exhibition at Averill and Bernard Leviton A+D Gallery (619 S. Wabash) presents the most innovative trends in illustrations for children’s books. Family day Sat 4/30, noon-3 PM.
Sat 4/23: The Reader hosts a Pop-Up Pot Shop at Emporium Arcade Bar (2363 N. Milwaukee) in tandem with our Marijuana Issue. Curated by Mary Eleanor Wallace of Tusk and Reader contributor Kate Sierzputowski, the event features pieces, pipes, clothing, pins, posters, and a selection of other paraphernalia from contemporary artists—including Leah Ball, Silk Shaman, and Noël Morical. There’s also a panel at 3 PM that will address the changing state of marijuana in Illinois. 11 AM-5 PM
Sat 4/23: Seven Chicago theater companies—including Two Pence, Babes with Blades, and the Commission Theatre—pick and perform their favorite Shakespearean death scene in Thus Die I. The deadly show is performed at the Indian Boundary Park Theater (2500 W. Lunt). 7:30 PM
Sun 4/24: Cochon 555, an all-inclusive food experience at Loews Hotel (455 N. Park) features five chefs—Cory Morris, Sarah Grueneberg, Alfredo Nogueira, Sarah Rinkavage, and Phillip Foss—competing to prepare the best dishes utilizing an entire pig. Also included are wine pairings and exclusive “pop-up” shops featuring ramen bars, signature desserts, tartare bars, and cocktails. 5 PM
Sun 4/24: She Crew presents its third annual Sadie Hawkin’s Dance at the Hideout (1354 W. Wabansia), featuring music by all-female Beastie Boys cover band She’s Crafty, food, drinks, and a literal smashing of the patriarchy (on a piñata). All proceeds benefit the female empowerment organization. 6 PM
