Time to plan the weekend. Here’s some of what we recommend:
Fri 1/8: Late Late Breakfast hosts the Roast of Donald Trump, a skewering of the presidential candidate at the Hideout (1354 W. Wabansia), with local comedians stepping into the roles of Ben Carson, Hillary Clinton, and the Donald himself. As is customary at LLB events, there will be pancakes. 8 PM
Fri 1/8: At Beyond the Valley of the Dahl at Studio L’Amour (4001 N. Ravenswood) the regular lit salon Naked Girls Reading reads Roald Dahl. As usual, it’s BYO. 8 PM
1/8-1/10: LA-based comic Beth Stelling makes a triumphant return to Zanies (1548 N. Wells) in the city where she cut her teeth. Fri 8:30 and 10:30 PM; Sat 7, 9, and 11:15 PM; Sun 8:30 PM
1/8-1/31: “Seventy-Seven” at Galerie F (2381 N. Milwaukee) is a collection of new works by street artist Penny Pinch, each inspired by one of Chicago’s 77 community areas. Opening reception Fri 1/8, 6-10 PM.
Sat 1/9: The Lagunitas Beer Brunch at Schubas (3159 N. Southport) is a five-course collaboration between Lagunitas, whose beers will be incorporated into dishes like beignets with peach-berry-Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale jam, and Bloodshot Records, who’ll provide music swag. Attendees will also be in the running to get a five-day pass to the Tomorrow Never Knows Fest. Noon
1/9-1/10: Bulls do their damnedest to get the brave souls who choose to ride them off their backs at the Professional Bull Riders Chicago Invitational at Allstate Arena (6920 Mannheim, Rosemont), with winning riders moving up in the ranks on the way to the world championships. Sat 6:50 PM, Sun 1:50 PM
Sun 1/10: Ten mixologists—including Lee Zaremba of Billy Sunday, Chad Hauge of Longman & Eagle, and Mony Benni of Queen Mary—compete at the Stone Fence Mitten Competition at the Chicago Athletic Association (21 S. Michigan) to see who can create the best cocktail. Admission to taste is free, but organizers ask that you bring a winter accessory to donate to CPS kids and families in need. 7-9:30 PM
