“Chicago is home to what might be the greatest collection of outdoor stone carving in urban America. Few know it exists. And now the government is wiping much of it out.”

At his site Interesting Ideas, William Swislow has an online archive of stone carvings along the city’s lakefront – many of the pictures taken by Aaron Packer of the Packer Schopf Gallery. It’s a fascinating browse, as is Swislow’s collection of Western Avenue signs.

Update: Not to mention the Gyros Signs of Chicago.
