During the recent cold spell, our critics turned to some Latin American favorites for warmth. Braised oxtails marinated in bitter-orange mojo criollo are the specialty at the new Laguardia’s Cuban Bistro, a Logan Square offshoot of Bucktown’s family-run Cafe Laguardia. At Lakeview’s new Cassava, all the offerings are gluten free, including the snackable specialty buns pao de queijo (pan de yuca in owner Jose Flores’s native Ecuador), available along with soup, smoothies, Metropolis coffee, and European-style hot chocolate made from molten bars. And the Wicker Park/Bucktown location of 90 Miles Cuban Cafe continues to expand, adding the building next door to its enclosed back patio with a fireplace video on the TV.
