In this week’s paper I previewed the Friday concert by the brilliant reedist Roscoe Mitchell at Constellation, but on Thursday night he’ll be sharing his thoughts as part of a free panel at the Chicago Cultural Center. Presented in conjunction with Prairie, the ongoing sound installation there by artist Shawn Decker, the discussion—titled “Surround Sound: Prairie and Beyond”—will be moderated by Museum of Contemporary art curator Dieter Roelstraete, and will also include reedist and composer Ken Vandermark and Pamela Jennings, director of the School of the Art Institute’s Shapiro Center for Research and Collaboration. According to the press materials, “the participants will discuss their views on concepts such as organizing sound, planning dynamic spaces and innovative environments, as well as improvisation and self-organizing systems.” The discussion takes place in the Claudia Cassidy Theater from 6 to 8 PM.
