If you feel like hitting the highway this weekend you could do worse than head for Dark Lord Day in Muenster, Indiana, where Three Floyds Brewery celebrates the release of its Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout with BBQ, a home brew tasting, and a lot of thrash metal. Hotly anticipated by fans of thick, malty beer, the limited edition monster brew is made with coffee, molasses, and honey and weighs in at a staggering 13 percent alcohol, so for god’s sake take a designated driver.
Closer to home, Three Floyds kicks off summer on May 5 by tapping into the first of this year’s Gumballhead Wheat Beer with a party at the Handlebar. Named after a comic familiar to Reader readers, it’s the anti-Dark Lord: a dry, superhoppy, bitter brew with a citrusy edge. This is the second annual release party at the Handlebar, and last year’s was mobbed. The restuarant promises food specials and the chance to win brewery swag. And, yes, lots of beer.
