Here at the Reader we’ve been big fans of Daytrotter for a while now. The Quad Cities indie-rock phenomenon not only organizes shows—including “barnstormer” tours that hit the kind of small semirural towns most tours skip—but also records and posts short sets from all kinds of traveling bands for free download (my band Mannequin Men among them). And the guys behind the project maintain a remarkably high standard of quality. Case in point: the excellent new session with NYC psych-pop outfit Cults that they posted today. Daytrotter’s live-in-the-studio format and knack for the generous but judicious deployment of nicely springy reverb suit Cults perfectly, and any chance to listen to “Go Outside”—currently on a trajectory toward my top ten singles of 2010—is a treat.
