The eighth installment of the West Fest street festival in West Town, going down July 7-8, is an ambitious one, with a pro-am bicycle race (Tour de West Town), a Kid’s Fest (bouncy castles! pony rides!), and a Pup Fest featuring “paw painting, doggie tattoos, canine gift bags and of course, free ‘paw cooling’ stations.” (Somewhere in a very poor country, a disillusioned young man somehow stumbles across this sentence and vows to devote the rest of his life to destroying America.) But as in previous years, the big draw is the per capita density of fried-food purveyors. Oh yeah, and a bunch of bands and stuff.

The music programming is divvied up between two stages, a format that’s doubtless familiar to anyone who’s made a habit of attending the vast number of street fests in town. A rock-oriented stage booked by the Empty Bottle will feature Black Lips, Bad Veins, Stagnant Pools—who I like a lot, and who have a new record coming out on Polyvinyl in August—and a few others (also, more bands TBA). The dance-oriented stage boasts a range of local DJ talent including Derrick Carter, Jesse de la Peña, Flosstradamus, Zebo, and the Dark Wave Disco DJs, as well as British underground EDM sensation Sinden.
