Most of the reviews are in for Theater Oobleck’s New York remount of The Strangerer and so far nobody’s pulled a gun. In fact, the response looks pretty friendly. Of those we’ve seen, the Times‘s was toughest: reviewer Andy Webster found the actors “delightful,” but concluded that “while clever and fitfully funny, ‘The Strangerer’ doesn’t explore specific issues sufficiently to deliver fully as political commentary.” A.J. Mell of Backstage wrote that “the real moments are so utterly real and the bizarre moments so utterly bizarre that the play takes the humor of incongruity to a new plane.” Variety critic Sam Thielman called the show “uniquely weird and enthralling.” The Strangerer continues through August 7 at the Barrow Street Theatre.
