After two years in Pilsen, Workshop, the boutique and studio of Frei Designs‘ Anne Novotny, is moving. Novotny is closing the storefront and transforming into a store-within-a-store at Post 27, the vintage-modern furniture-and-more shop at 1819 W. Grand. She says the business of running the store, working on her own line, plus teaching at the School of the Art Institute got to be too much. The south-side location, although she loves it, was a liability, especially since most of her customers live on the north side. The economy didn’t help either. “I’m not bitter,” she says, “but I’m worried about the state of the independent boutique in Chicago.”
Novotny says she will continue the “see-through” studio experience, using Post 27 as a design and production space. She’ll stick to selling her own line for the physical space but will still sell some vintage items on the Workshop website. The boutique will close August 12; until then Novotny is selling fabric, fixtures, and notions in addition to samples and old stock. She plans to officially open at Post 27 with an event on September 8 and promises more details to come.
