Rob Cohen’s car-fetish action movie The Fast and the Furious (2001) grossed $145 million and made Vin Diesel a star; this sequel is helmed by John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood), but without Diesel’s brooding lunkhead presence it’s more like “1/2 Fast 1/2 Furious.” Paul Walker returns as the vacant, blond undercover cop, relocated to Miami and enlisted to help a beautiful federal agent (Eva Mendes) bust a high-rolling drug runner. Pop star Tyrese steals scenes as Walker’s old friend and fellow racing enthusiast, but the buddy angle is pretty cold porridge—as in the original, the only meaningful relationships are between men and their engines.
