Mark Wahlberg reunites with Contraband director Baltasar Kormakur for an action movie that’s even more cynical and sadistic than its predecessor. Wahlberg and Denzel Washington play government agents who rob a bank while posing undercover as criminals. They learn they’ve been set up by their crooked superiors, who have thrown them to the mercy of an even more crooked CIA man (Bill Paxton) and the Mexican drug lord (Edward James Olmos) whose money they stole. None of these likable actors can make up for the overwhelming mean-spiritedness; this contains an awful lot of torture, which the filmmakers render especially ugly by trying to pass it off as fun (mainly by having the characters issue lousy one-liners while it’s happening). There’s also a bit of misogyny thrown in for good measure.
