In this soulful drama, an illegal immigrant from Mexico (Demian Bichir) borrows $12,000 to buy a used truck so he can start his own upscale gardening business in LA, and after the vehicle is stolen he and his resentful son (Jose Julian) search for it across the city’s Latino neighborhoods. Screenwriter Eric Eason blatantly recycles the premise of Vittorio De Sica’s The Bicycle Thief (1947) but mostly avoids the other movie’s sociopolitical element to focus instead on his flawed protagonist. A major star in Mexico, Bichir is quietly affecting as the father, a humble striver who faces loss at every turn. Chris Weitz (The Twilight Saga: New Moon) directed. In English and subtitled Spanish.
