Written, directed by, and starring Peter Wang, this 1986 independent production follows a Chinese-American family on a visit to Peking, where they meet some long-lost relatives. Though Wang tries to get a little melodrama going (there’s a romance, a struggle to pass a university entrance exam, and a climactic ping-pong tournament), most of the movie is devoted to culture clashing, as each family expresses bemused astonishment over the customs and attitudes of the other. A small, cleanly made film, not without its mild charm but too superficial to be very engaging. With Sharon Iwai and Kelvin Han Yee; Shirley Sun produced and coauthored the screenplay.
