Returning from the colonies, a group of British children are captured by a band of pirates. Based on a novel by Richard Hughes, Alexander Mackendrick’s 1965 film expands the definition of the adventure movie to include a complex analysis of power relationships, in which the children, through the force of their anarchic innocence, gradually gain the upper hand over their captors. Photographed in CinemaScope by Douglas Slocombe; with Anthony Quinn, James Coburn, Deborah Baxter, Lila Kedrova, and Gert Frobe.
