Daniel Stamm’s queasy mockumentary follows a trio of LA film students who set out to record a real-life suicide. After running an online ad and interviewing more than a dozen candidates, they settle on a young Brit who’s been diagnosed with a brain tumor. This provides them with a little more ethical armor for their ghoulish project, but eventually the professional line between documentarian and subject breaks down and the rationale for what they’re doing becomes hopelessly compromised. Stamm plays the director’s roommate, who’s getting in on the act with a making-of project; the device not only adds another layer to the exploitation but minimizes the practical contrivances that always seem to undermine mockumentaries. 101 min.
