With production designer Ken Adam having deserted the series and Roger Moore all but checked into a nursing home, the Bond films hadn’t much left to cover their threadbare formula. This one, directed by John Glen, just follows the numbers, plodding from one unimaginative set piece to the next. Even the tony cast of villains—Christopher Walken, Patrick Bauchau (fresh from Wim Wenders’s The State of Things), and Grace Jones—can’t add any flavor to the grindingly predictable proceedings.
