Adapted from a travel memoir by Bill Bryson, this asinine comedy is for anyone who wants to see two of America’s finest screen actors completely humiliate themselves. Robert Redford plays Bryson, who sets out to hike the Appalachian Trail against his wife’s wishes and his own better judgment; Nick Nolte, looking worse than his notorious mug shot, is Bryson’s rascally old pal, who agrees to come along and gets them into various predicaments. Nick Offerman and Kristen Schaal turn up briefly to provide some comic relief, which you’re not supposed to need when the movie itself is a comedy. Ken Kwapis (He’s Just Not That Into You) directed; with Emma Thompson and Mary Steenburgen.
