Heading a program of three blues films is this 1973 featurette, directed by Les Blank with Skip Gerson—a portrait of the late Texan guitar player Mance Lipscomb, who lived as a sharecropper before he was discovered by Chris Strachwitz in 1960 for Arhoolie Records. On the same program are Les Blank’s The Blues According to Lightnin’ Hopkins (1967) and St. Clair Bourne’s Big City Blues (1982), which focuses on a new generation of Chicago blues musicians—including an interview with Jim Brewer, a lecture/performance by Billy Branch, and performances by Son Seals and Queen Sylvia Embry. Lincoln Beauchamp (“Chicago Beau”) will host the evening.
