Two Indian-American siblings living in New York City try to navigate between old-world expectations and the values of their non-Asian peers in this 1999 family drama by Krutin Patel. Nina (Sheetal Sheth) sleeps around and can’t commit, clean-cut accountant Raj (Faran Tahir) is frustrated in his career, and their fussy widowed mother (a borderline stereotype given a touch of genuine sadness by Madhur Jaffrey) wants them to find good Indian spouses. Despite the familiar story, both kids are three-dimensional characters, and first-time director Patel embraces their generational dilemmas with feeling and wit. 105 min.
