German director Ciro Cappellari’s 2005 video documentary captures the great South African jazz pianist performing in his homeland on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Cappellari uses interviews with Ibrahim and his cohorts to provide an erratic and elliptical version of the pianist’s development, his apartheid-driven exile to Switzerland, and his discovery by Duke Ellington. Unfortunately, he’s happy to indulge Ibrahim’s rambling philosophical musings; the musician even gives a martial arts demonstration (mercifully, it’s brief). 60 min.
