Silvio Soldini, director of the internationally acclaimed Bread and Tulips, delivers another whimsical Italian comedy (2004) whose characters’ lives are defined by happenstance. The ravishing Licia Maglietta plays a telekinetic bookstore owner whose surging emotions cause lightbulbs and electrical appliances to break; the main story concerns her mixed feelings toward an aggressive young suitor, but Soldini interweaves several subplots, including the discovery by the bookseller’s brother that he was adopted. The characters are marginally interesting, but the busy crosscutting begins to grate after a while. In Italian with subtitles. 125 min.
