The psychologist-detective of James Patterson’s best-selling thriller novels returns to the screen again after Kiss the Girls (1997) and Along Came a Spider (2001), though Morgan Freeman has ceded the role to Tyler Perry, who was good enough to leave his gigantic falsies at home. Clichéd, improbable, and frequently risible, this police procedural involves an elite assassin (Matthew Fox) who enjoys torturing his victims and taunting the hero over the phone in a diabolical game of cat and mouse. You have to wonder what Perry’s devoted fan base of stout-hearted Christian women will think of a movie in which half the female characters are mutilated and/or murdered. Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious) directed; with Edward Burns, Jean Reno, Cicely Tyson, and Giancarlo Esposito.
