Catherine Breillat carries her signature thesis—that hetero sex expresses men and women’s mutual loathing—to its ludicrous extreme in this 2003 French feature. Amira Casar plays a sexual seeker (rather like the heroine of Breillat’s Romance) who hires a well-hung gay cruiser (Italian porn star Rocco Siffredi) to “watch me where I’m unwatchable.” During a series of graphic nocturnal encounters they smash various taboos and exchange hilariously overripe dialogue (“The veils [men] adorn us with ritually anticipate our shrouds”). Breillat’s mix of dramatic skill and feminist intimidation has cowed plenty of critics in the past, but no political agenda could redeem this movie’s joyless pedantry.
